Summer and the WAHM

by in WAHM Issues

Summer is here and for the work at home mom, it definitely can mean a change of pace. School is out and kids are home, so that means thinking of new ways to get work done while kids are underfoot. Here are my top 5 tips for working at home during the summer.

  1. Prepare snacks in advance. There is nothing quite like getting into a groove with work and you hear the dreaded words “Mom I'm hungry!” To keep the flow of work going, have washed and cut up veggies, fruit and yogurt in your fridge plus snack bars, fruit leathers, and other snacks in an easily accessed cabinet for your kids to just grab and go. Plus they will be there for you too when you need a snack.
  2. Create a fun list. I've seen various incarnations of this from a poster on the wall, to a dry erase board, to even a jar with little pieces of paper with activities written on them. Come up with a list in advance of things for your kids to do without you that they can refer to when they are bored. It also helps to keep a list of things for you to do with your kids when you have a free moment. Remember it is your summer too!
  3. Visit the library. Make this a once a week trip so that your kids can pick out new books to read. Most libraries have a summer reading program to encourage your kids to read. If not, then create your own. Have them keep track of how many books they read and award prizes at the end of the summer.
  4. Hire some help. Chances are you have some bored teenagers in your neighborhood looking to earn a few extra dollars this summer. Your kids will love the chance to play with an older kid who can take them for a bike ride or visit the park. Check out Care.com to find someone qualified in your area.
  5. Get some Inspiration. I have had great luck with coming up with new activities for my child with the help of a few books. Some of my favorites right now include: What Shall We Do Today?, Green Crafts for Children, and Unplugged Play.

Work definitely takes on a more relaxed vibe in our home over the summer, but it doesn't stop. I would love to know what your favorite tips for getting work done in the summer are. Please share in the comments below.

Having good snacks ready to go for the boys to grab has saved me huge amounts of frustration and time all year round!

So glad to know it works for you too. Summer rolls around and my daughter becomes the hungriest kid around!
