Creativity Can Come from Consulting

by in Inspiration

I spend about 80-90% of my time at my desk doing the same routine tasks. I process coupons and promotions for Sunshine Rewards. I blog on my niche sites. I contribute to various forums and Facebook groups. Every day can start to run into the next.

But about 10-20% of my time I spend consulting with others. In addition to being a great way to earn money, it's a way to stay fresh and creative. In fact, I find that consulting for others can actually make me think outside the box even more than when I am working on my own sites. Why is that?

First, I want to do a good job. That's my number one priority when I consult. I want them to feel like they are getting their money's worth. So I go all out. I think back over what has worked for me over the last 10 years. I brainstorm for new ideas. I try to look at things from all angles. I'm not content to go with the same old ideas but rather try to come up with unique ideas for the client.

Second, I'm using fresh eyes. I see my own sites all the time and they become a blur. Looking at someone else's business, I am approaching it from a completely fresh perspective. Imagine what you could come up with if you could look at your own business the way that you look at someone else's.

Lastly, I listen to what they have to say. The give and take of working with others versus working by myself all day is very different. Sure, I have Eric Nagel to bug over Skype, but it's different to be sitting in a room with clients going back and forth taking into consideration all of their questions, needs, and criticisms. Listening to them and responding helps me engage more with what I am doing.

If you haven't considered adding any consulting to your business model because it will just be extra work, think about maybe just taking a quick job or two helping someone with something that you do routinely without even thinking about. You might just find that you get as much out of it as they do!
